Kuala Nerus – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is a first-time host for the international seminar Nexus Summit: Sustainability in a Changing World (NEXSUM 2024).
The four-day seminar is attended by more than 100 local and international participants, including from Taiwan, China, and Russia.
NEXSUM 2024 explores pressing global issues, such as carbon release, environment, food security, energy, and climate change.
NEXSUM 2024 Chairman, Prof. Dr. Ikhwan Abdullah, said UMT is hosting the event with the aim of highlighting Malaysia’s effort towards global sustainability.
“The presence of participants consisting of academics, industry experts, and policy makers from different countries makes the seminar an important platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge,” said Prof Ikhwan, who was present at the seminar’s opening ceremony at UMT campus in Gong Badak.
Prof. Ikhwan, who is also the Director of the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP UMT), said some of the topics to be discussed are strategies for reducing carbon release, green technology, and innovative approaches towards ensuring food security amid the global climate change.
“In addition, there will also be sessions to discuss the most effective use of renewable energy and opportunities for countries to cooperate towards achieving the aim of environment sustainability.
He added that the seminar provides a great opportunity for academics to further develop the potential of their research and share new ideas with researchers from other countries.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mikhail Kurushkin, Dean of the Faculty of Biotechnology ITMO University, Russia, is one of the participants at NEXSUM 2024.
“I am grateful to be here as one of the plenary speakers, to talk about a topic related to education and how it can help us create global sustainability regardless of our fields, whether marine biotechnology or biodiversity.
”UMT is an important university for Malaysia because it has different approaches to predict the conditions of the oceans and save various marine species, and because of these, we need to make this university more well-known,” he said.
NEXSUM 2024 is a platform that helps with finding new solutions in an effort to protect the environment at the global level.
