Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has successfully organized a special event for UMT’s alumni, Majlis Anugerah Ikon Alumni 2023, which took place at Sultan Mizan Hall, UMT.
At the event, UMT alumnus Cheryl Rita Kaur Dalbir Singh was announced as the winner of the Ikon Alumni Unggul UMT award.
The award was given to her as a recognition towards her excellent academic achievement and significant contributions in the academic area and in co-curricular activities when she was a student and the contributions she extended to the country in the field of maritime.
Cheryl, who graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology (Honours) in 2005, showed a consistent excellence in academic and co-curricular activities and has gained recognitions from various parties during her 18-year career as fellow and chief researcher at the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA).
In addition, the recipient of the Diploma Programme in Finland fund under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has also been appointed as R, D & C expert by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and as a speaker for international conferences.
Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim in his speech said it is important to recognize the achievements so as to inspire other students to put in the efforts in order to achieve excellence.
“We not only recognize academic excellence but also active contributions towards the community and the country”.
“We must achieve success not only in the academic field but also in the development of character and leadership,” said Prof. Zamri in his speech during the opening ceremony of the event.
Three new categories of awards were introduced at the event, namely Ikon Alumni Staf UMT, Ikon Alumni Dermawan, and Ikon Alumni Harapan.
The event also served as the best platform for establishing networking and sharing ideas among new and old generations of alumni. Prof. Zamri said.
“The recognitions given to the recipients should motivate all of UMT students to work hard at achieving greater success in the future.
“UMT is forever committed to producing graduates who are not just academically excellent but are also virtuous, competitive, and visionary,” he said.
