Kuala Nerus – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) is taking another step forward in its effort to empower the community and contribute to sustainable development when it has received fund totalling RM500,000 to implement 12 high-impact projects under the Komuniti@UniMADANI initiative.

The fund has been awarded by the Malaysia Ministry of Finance, who believes UMT will be able to strengthen the relationship between the university and the community through various social initiatives.

According to UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor ChM. Dr. Marinah Mohd Ariffin, almost half of the fund, which is RM213,000, is allocated to researchers from the Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science (FPSM) for them to develop the local community.

“Congratulations to FPSM on securing the allocation, which serves as proof of the ministry’s confidence in UMT’s ability to implement projects based on social innovation”

The projects are believed will provide positive impacts not only in terms of the community’s improved standards of living but also the country’s sustainability.

These initiatives are in line with UMT’s efforts in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations, including SDG 2 for zero hunger and SDG 17 for partnership between government agencies and communities”.

Professor Marinah also expressed her hope that the implementation of the projects will strengthen UMT’s position as a higher learning institution that not only focuses on academic research but also fulfils its social responsibilities.

“This trust is a recognition to UMT and it motivates us to continue our commitment in providing positive impacts to the local community through knowledge transfer and capacity development of the community,” she said.
