KUALA NERUS, 16 November 2024 – MOHE Secretary General Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang today has paid a working visit to Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to survey ongoing development projects and the flood control initiative currently being implemented.
The aim of the visit was to evaluate the progress of the infrastructure projects for improving academic facilities and students’ welfare and ensure the effectiveness of the flood control system in reducing the effect of flood at areas around the campus.
Prof. Zaini was briefed on the latest development projects involving the construction and improvement of academic and administrative facilities for meeting the university’s current needs.
Prof. Zaini also took some time to survey the work on flood control system that is being constructed and costing millions of ringgit to ensure the safety of the campus and the students and avoid disruption of the teaching and learning process during the rainy season, which has often led to floods.
He said that the contractors ought to complete the projects according to the scheduled time.
“If the delay is caused by insufficient manpower, the contractors must increase the number of workers to solve the issue,” said Prof. Zaini during the presentation of UMT Academic Complex project progress.
UMT has taken a great initiative to ensure that its campus is ready to face any natural disasters, by involving several local authorities, experts in related fields, and its researchers. The flood control project includes deepening and widening the rivers, upgrading flood containment pool, realigning drainage system, and constructing a flood control system at the river’s mouth.
Meanwhile, UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim expressed his thanks to Prof. Zaini for taking the time to visit UMT and witnessed the projects’ current state.
“These projects will provide a big impact towards the holistic development of the university as it seeks to achieve its vision of becoming the pioneer in world class education.
“The projects are expected to provide a big impact to UMT upon their completion especially the flood control system project and the coastal prevention system. I hope that once the projects have been completed, there will be no more floods in UMT when the monsoon season comes,” he said.
