KUALA NERUS, 10 December 2024 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has continued to strengthen its research and development when it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Charoen Pokphand Group, a renowned conglomerate from Thailand.
The MoU will focus on a strategic partnership in the field of animal breeding, particularly crustaceans, and fisheries sustainability.
The collaboration will help fulfil the food security and safety goal outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The project leader, Dr. Mohd Fazrul Hisam Abd Aziz, said the initiative will provide the opportunity to benefit the expertise of both parties in developing modern technology for crustacean breeding.
“We hope that through this collaboration UMT will be able to contribute to the development of sustainable fisheries sector and conduct high quality research with outcomes that can be applied globally,” said Dr. Fazrul, who is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science.
Charoen Pokphand Group has wide experience in the aquaculture and fisheries sector, making the collaboration an important platform for expanding research, implementing technology transfer, conducting training for students and researchers, and carrying out large-scale projects.
The event held at UMT’s Senate Banquet Hall was also attended by UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Food Science Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Effendy Abd. Wahid, and UMT officers.
Charoen Pokphand Group Co. Limited was represented by Senior Vice President Jhomkitti Sirikul and Assistant Vice President Pilailuck Pichaiwatt.
In his speech, Prof. Zamri said the collaboration represents an important step towards creating new innovations that are relevant to current and future needs.
“This collaboration is expected to provide positive impacts not only to the fisheries and aquaculture sector but also the economy and the natural resource sustainability. With the strategic relationship, UMT continues to solidify its role as a university focusing on maritime and aquatic science recognized at the international arena,” he said.
