KUALA NERUS, 15 January – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) successfully organized the Sustainable Day today, further proving its commitment in establishing a sustainable campus.
The programme became a platform for creating awareness among staff and students regarding the importance of environmental sustainability and the need for proactive actions.
UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim in his officiating speech said the effort of making the campus sustainable is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and UMT Strategic Plan, which includes an emphasis on sustainability in the university’s operations.
“UMT is committed in becoming an institution of higher learning that leads the way in sustainability. Initiatives such as the use of renewable energies, reduction of plastic waste, and ecosystem conservation projects are measures that have been and will be implemented,” he said.
Various interesting activities were held during the Sustainable Day, including a green innovation expo, sustainability talks, car-free day, sports, and energy expo, such as solar, hydrogen, and biomass.
The activities were open to students, staff, and the local community, serving as part of the awareness campaigns in the effort to conserve the environment.
One of the main initiatives promoted was the use of electric vehicles on campus.
“We have stepped forward with the introduction of electric vehicles as UMT’s official vehicles for use by the university’s community.”
“We are in the body design phase for several electric vehicles (EV) such as cars and buses, as part of our initiatives to support the environmental conservation effort.”
He said the introduction of environmentally friendly vehicles is one of the means to establishing a sustainable campus, in addition to the installation of solar panels and setting up of centralized parking lots, which will be constructed in the near future”.
He added that continuous efforts will make UMT a model university in the aspect of environmental conservation, for the wellbeing of the future generations.
