MARANG, 3 March, 2025 – A total of 116 orphans from the Darul Falah Orphanage were celebrated in a breaking fast programme, Iftar Kasih Darul Falah, organized by the Off-Campus Representative Committee (JPLK), Residential College, Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

The event aimed to instill compassionate values, strengthen bonds between off-campus students, orphans, and the local community, and instill the spirit of volunteerism among university students.

The programme held at the Darul Falah Hostel in Bukit Payong was attended by various parties, including the management and staff of HEPA, UMT, representatives from the Terengganu Islamic Welfare Association (PERKASA), hostel teachers, and student volunteers from JPLK and the Off-Campus Representative Club (KPLK).

In his officiating speech, UMT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Dr. Mohd Izani Mohd Zain emphasized that a university is not only a centre for academic excellence but is also responsible for developing the community.

“Our presence here is not merely to share a meal at iftar, but more than that. It symbolizes our compassionate values, togetherness, and concern for the welfare and well-being of those in need. Programmes like this not only shape responsible students but also ensure that the surrounding community benefits from them.”

He also emphasized the importance of fostering students who care about societal issues and of implementing the initiatives introduced in the 2025 Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni)’s Address on 27 February, including cultivating a dedication in students to become exemplary.

Among the activities conducted were an Azan and Dai’e competition, congregational prayers, and a communal iftar followed by a meet-and-greet session between university students and the orphans.

These activities not only allowed students to hone their leadership and communication skills but also gave the orphans a chance to showcase their talents in a nurturing and supportive environment.

“We want the children at Darul Falah to know that they are never alone. Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and the entire community are always concerned and will continue to ensure they receive the support they deserve,” he added.

The programme was also supported by generous companies and individuals who contributed sponsorships, including Pancaran Aqu Bina Enterprise and Mam Padu Trading.

This support underscores the importance of collaborations between educational institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector in helping those in need.

Prof. Izani also urged for the spirit of volunteerism to be nurtured among students and the community.

“Maybe today we are in a good and comfortable position, but we must not forget those who need our help. This Ramadan is the perfect time to increase our charitable efforts and contribute more to noble causes.”

This strategic initiative is not just about a one-time charity programme but is also aimed at maintaining a long-term relationship between students and the local community.

Prof. Izani added plans are in place to bring the orphans to the UMT campus to give them early exposure to university life, inspiring them to pursue higher education in the future.
