We are excited to share this July edition of the UMT Newsletter, celebrating another important milestone in our university’s path toward global excellence.

This month, we proudly celebrate a historic achievement: for the very first time, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has been ranked among the top 801–850 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings. This milestone is more than just a number; it is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collective spirit of our entire UMT community. It highlights our unwavering commitment to ranking among the top 100 universities in the world within the next five years, as outlined in our strategic plan. Earlier this year, we also launched a special bulletin to commemorate this remarkable success, symbolizing our shared pride and aspirations.

In this issue, we showcase the inspiring success of the Future@UMT programme, an initiative led by the Office of Student Affairs and the Alumni Division. This programme, which has expanded to include other public universities and teacher training institutes along Malaysia’s east coast, aims to empower our graduates with the skills and mindset needed to face global challenges and take on leadership roles in the future.

Further reinforcing our commitment to research excellence and societal impact, we recently hosted Students Research Day (SRD) 2025. This event served as a dynamic platform for our students to showcase innovative ideas and solutions, particularly through the application of artificial intelligence (AI). It also engaged 18 schools, inspiring young minds to appreciate the crucial role of AI in shaping future careers and everyday life.

In June, UMT once again celebrated World Ocean Week, led by the Institute of Oceanography and Environment. This year’s event successfully drew over 5,000 participants from different communities, highlighting our leadership in marine and environmental advocacy and strengthening our connections with the public.

We were honored to host His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness on campus during the Asia Pacific Heritage Seminar, organized jointly with the National Archives of Malaysia. The seminar, which focused on Baginda Omar’s personal letters, not only celebrated our rich heritage but also emphasized UMT’s dedication to cultural preservation and historical research.

In line with our strategic goals, we keep building strong collaborations with academic and industry partners. This month, we reinforced our partnerships with top aquaculture companies to boost research and innovation in aquaculture applications, supporting national food security and sustainable industry practices.

As you browse through this issue, we hope you feel the shared energy, pride, and collective commitment that propel UMT forward. This newsletter is more than a record of activities; it reflects our journey toward becoming a globally recognized institution that fosters knowledge, empowers communities, and advances the nation.

We appreciate your ongoing support and steadfast belief in our mission.
