UMT continues to strengthen its global presence as a dynamic and internationally recognised higher education institution. In line with the aspirations of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) to elevate Malaysia’s higher education to the global stage, UMT consistently implements various strategic initiatives encompassing global collaboration, student mobility, as well as active participation in impactful research and programmes.

One of the initiatives is strengthening collaboration with overseas higher education institutions. UMT has established strong networks with global strategic partners through the signing of 87 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and 21 Memoranda of Agreement (MoAs) from 2024 until June 2025. These agreements create vast opportunities for collaboration in various areas such as research, academic development, student and staff exchanges, as well as the sharing of resources and expertise.

UMT’s visibility on the international stage is also strengthened through the organisation of and participation in global programmes.

In 2024, UMT organised 499 programmes with foreign institutions, including conferences, workshops, seminars, and mobility programmes. This demonstrates the university’s commitment to connecting knowledge and expertise across borders.

Among the prestigious events hosted by UMT was the 12ᵗʰ ASEAN Workshop on Information Science and Technology (AWIST) 2024, held from 11 to 13 August 2024. The programme successfully brought together academics and researchers to discuss challenges and opportunities in the field of science and technology. The hosting of AWIST reflects UMT’s active role in supporting the advancement of education and research in the ASEAN region.

In addition, UMT was also a co-organiser of the 2nd International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Sustainability (ICETS 2024) together with Universitas Pamulang (UNPAM) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) of Indonesia. This conference served as an important platform to showcase research outputs and foster collaboration among researchers from diverse backgrounds and countries. It also reflects UMT’s continuous efforts in contributing to sustainable development in line with the global agenda.

Student involvement is also a priority in enhancing global visibility. UMT continues to strengthen its international student mobility programmes, particularly with ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. These programmes not only enrich students’ learning experiences through cross-cultural exposure, but also expand academic networks and enhance mutual understanding among regional communities.

From January 2024 to June 2025, UMT recorded a total of 1,468 international students, comprising full-time students and short-term mobility (non-graduating) students enrolled in credit-bearing programmes lasting two weeks or more. This figure reflects the international community’s confidence in the quality of education and academic environment offered by UMT.

With its steadily growing international reputation, UMT is on the right track to continue contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the progress of the global community. These efforts to enhance global visibility not only boost the institution’s achievements but also open up more opportunities for students and academics to thrive in a more competitive and holistic academic ecosystem.

UMT will remain committed to being a driver of world-class knowledge, strengthening regional and global relations, and playing an active role in advancing Malaysia’s higher education agenda on the international stage.
