KUALA NERUS, 11 August 2025 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) today announced the appointment of Professor Dr. Muhammad Ikhwanuddin Abdullah @Polity Ak Kria as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) for a three-year term, effective 11 August 2025.
The appointment is intended to continue the university’s agenda of strengthening high-impact research, empowering innovation, and enhancing strategic collaborations with industry and the community, in line with UMT’s mission as a leader in global sustainability, particularly in the marine sector.
Previously serving as Director of the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP), UMT, Professor Ikhwanuddin has demonstrated excellence throughout his tenure, earning numerous recognitions in research, large-scale project management, and the development of young research talent.
With extensive expertise in invertebrate aquaculture, particularly crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp, Professor Ikhwanuddin specialises in reproductive biology, larviculture, seed production, and hatchery technology.
His research has produced various findings that contribute to the growth of the fisheries industry and the sustainability of the nation’s marine resources.
In addition, he has been actively involved in research collaborations at both national and international levels, engaging with universities, government agencies, and industry players, positioning UMT as a key strategic partner in maritime and aquaculture innovation.
In a statement, UMT Vice-Chancellor said the appointment of Prof. Ikhwanuddin is a timely move to drive the university towards excellence in research and innovation.
“With his expertise and experience, we are confident that UMT’s research and innovation agenda will become more dynamic, inclusive, and competitive at the global level,” he said.
The entire UMT community extends its warmest congratulations to Prof. Ikhwanuddin on his appointment and wishes him continued strength to lead and realise the university’s vision in the field of research and innovation.
