Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlina Abd Aziz,
A distinguished academic from Japan visited UMT recently to give a talk as part of Intellectual Spotlight programme organized by UMT’s Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Development.
Prof. Masahiro (Masa) Sugiyama from the Institute for Future Initiatives at The University of Tokyo delivered an impactful talk titled “Decarbonization and Beyond: Findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Recent Literature.”
With extensive experience as a lead author for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, Prof. Masa shared critical insights into the pressing challenges of climate change and the essential role of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies in mitigating its effects. The primary objective of his talk was to discuss the latest findings from the IPCC and explore practical strategies for achieving decarbonization across various sectors.
In his view, UMT plays a vital role in addressing climate challenges and fostering collaboration between Malaysia and international partners. He expressed optimism about UMT’s contributions to climate research
“The engagement of institutions like UMT is essential for fostering interdisciplinary approaches and innovative solutions that can lead us toward a sustainable future, he said.”
This collaboration is particularly significant following Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlina Abd Aziz’s sabbatical at The University of Tokyo, which has strengthened ties between the two institutions.
The faculty’s Intellectual Spotlight programme aims to enhance bilateral relations with the Institute for Future Initiatives. It provides students and faculty with valuable exposure to the latest developments in decarbonization strategies while exploring practical implementations across sectors.
Prof. Masa’s visit not only enriched the academic environment at UMT but also inspired attendees to consider their roles in advocating for effective environmental policies. His insights into CDR technologies and climate strategies mark a significant step forward in fostering collaboration in climate research and action between Malaysia and Japan.
This session highlighted the importance of immediate action in mitigating climate change impacts while showcasing UMT’s commitment to being at the forefront of environmental research and innovation. The event also served as a platform for discussing how decarbonization not only addresses climate issues but also presents opportunities for economic growth through clean energy transitions, ultimately benefiting public health and quality of life.
