KUALA NERUS, 12 April 2025 – The Civil Defence Student Corps (SISPA) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) successfully organised a community service programme, SISPA Clean & Green, in collaboration with the Kampung Kubang Badak community. The initiative saw the participation of 83 students and three accompanying officers.

The programme aimed to foster civic awareness and promote environmental sustainability among students and the local community. Among the key activities organized were beach clean-up efforts, communal work to repair a surau fence damaged by erosion, collection of recyclable materials, and tree planting to combat coastal erosion.

A total of 30 trees were planted along the coastal area, with seedlings contributed by the Terengganu State Forestry Department, as an early effort to preserve the coastal ecosystem.

According to the Deputy Commander of the UMT SISPA Corps, Major (Affiliate) Mohd Juhari bin Ab Kadir, the programme not only strengthened ties between students and the local community but also provided students with the opportunity to better understand their social roles and responsibilities in protecting the environment.

“Through close cooperation with the villagers, SISPA Corps members who were mostly young people were able to experience the spirit of volunteerism and practise noble values in their daily lives,” he explained.

The villagers also gave their full support to the programme, contributing to a lively and harmonious communal atmosphere. In total, nearly 1,770 kilogrammes of rubbish were successfully collected and sorted according to category. Of this, 117 kilogrammes of beverage bottles were cleaned and gathered for recycling, supporting UMT’s Zero Waste Market initiative in conjunction with UMT Sustainability Day 2025, scheduled for 30 April 2025.

The programme also received cooperation from the Kampung Kubang Badak Neighbourhood Watch (KRT), Surau Hj. Alias Committee, as well as other relevant local agencies.

UMT SISPA Corps hopes this initiative will serve as a catalyst for more green efforts jointly undertaken by the university and the community, towards building a society that is sustainable-minded and more conscious of environmental care.
