New managerial appointees to continue with UMT empowerment agenda

Kuala Nerus, 19 January 2025 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has a new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International) when Prof. Dr. Suriyani Muhamad has been appointed to the post. Her appointment took effect from 19 January 2025. She has a background in economics and was previously the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Development. She had held the post since 2022.

The appointment is for two years. Higher Education Director General Datuk Prof. Dr. Azlinda Azman presented Prof. Suriyani with the appointment letter on 13 January at the Ministry of Higher Education.

The ministry is confident that UMT’s academic development and internationalisation agenda will continue to excel with this appointment, Datuk Azlinda said.

Meanwhile, Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Fadzil Mohd Akhir has been appointed as UMT Pro Vice Chancellor (Strategy, Performance, and Corporate). Previously Professor Fadzil had held the post of Director at UMT’s Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) for five years beginning 2019.

Professor Ts. Dr. Noor Maizura Mohamad Noor, previously the Director of the Centre for Academic Development and Management, has been appointed Pro Vice Chancellor (Industry, Community, and Digital). The appointment of the two took effect from 5 December 2024.

UMT Vice Chancellor Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim said the new appointees will continue with the agenda of empowering UMT to become the leader of the country’s marine science and aquatic resources and help steer the economic development of the community through the Blue Economy.

Prof. Zamri urged all UMT staff to work together to increase the university’s visibility at the international front and put UMT at par with other renowned universities.
