Kuala Lumpur, 25 March – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and Aquaria KLCC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in the preservation and conservation of coral reefs.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, which emphasises the importance of sustaining marine ecosystems.
The MoU signing ceremony was held at Aquaria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, symbolising the renowned aquarium’s commitment to marine conservation efforts.
The brief ceremony saw UMT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, and Chief Executive Officer of Aquawalk Sdn Bhd, Daryl Foong, signing their names to seal the partnership.
Also present at the event was the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, YB Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud.
The collaboration encompasses various initiatives, including coral reef restoration programmes, joint research, and public awareness campaigns on the importance of preserving marine ecosystems.
Prof. Mohd Zamri reaffirmed UMT’s commitment to environmental conservation and its continuous support for initiatives that help preserve marine biodiversity.
“At UMT, we shoulder the responsibility of ensuring the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Coral reef conservation is an urgent necessity, and initiatives such as this can yield long-term positive impacts. Education and public awareness also play a crucial role in ensuring future generations understand the importance of environmental preservation, which ultimately benefits global biodiversity,” he said.
Meanwhile, UMT coral reef researcher and expert, Associate Professor Dr. Tan Chun Hong, highlighted the importance of conservation efforts in ensuring the survival of marine biodiversity, particularly in Malaysian waters.
“Coral reefs serve as primary habitats for various marine species and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the marine ecosystem. However, threats such as climate change, pollution, and uncontrolled human activities have led to the drastic degradation of coral reefs. Through this partnership, we can conduct more in-depth research and develop more effective coral reef restoration technologies,” he stated.
For the record, UMT has implemented programmes such as the Coral Reef Edu-Awareness initiative, which involves school students in raising awareness about the importance of coral reef conservation.
The signing of this MoU is expected to expand the scope of cooperation, ensuring that conservation efforts are carried out continuously and have a lasting positive impact on marine ecosystems.
