KUALA NERUS, 1 October 2025 – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) introduced a unique approach in conjunction with the Orientation Week for the 2025/2026 academic session, where more than 2,000 new students were given the opportunity to experience the Go Green UMT programme.

Unlike the usual orientation routines that focus primarily on briefings and university introductions, students were taken into the field to participate in mangrove replanting activities around the campus area. This effort not only symbolizes the beginning of their academic journey but also reflects a shared commitment to environmental conservation.

UMT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim said the initiative is in line with the university’s global sustainability agenda to ensure the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.

“UMT is not only committed to producing academically excellent graduates but also individuals with a high awareness of their responsibility to protect the environment. Mangrove planting is crucial in safeguarding the campus from coastal erosion risks while at the same time educating students on their role in supporting the global sustainability agenda.”

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Maybank Islamic Berhad for the financial contribution of more than RM150,000, channelled through UMT’s Pusat Ihsan, in making the Go Green UMT programme a success. My appreciation also goes to the UMT Student Affairs Division (HEPA) for managing this programme with great commitment and dedication,”he added.

In addition to mangrove planting, the Go Green UMT programme also featured a beach clean-up around the coastal areas, as well as sand therapy, which allowed students to personally experience the natural healing wonders of beach sand.

For Thivaashini A/P Pulegenthi, 19, a new Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) student, the experience was nothing short of extraordinary and a first in her life.

“I feel very fortunate to begin my studies at UMT with such a valuable experience. The mangrove planting activity has made me realize the importance of protecting the environment, while sand therapy was enjoyable, relaxing, and a great way to get to know each other,”she said with excitement.

The organisation of such environmentally oriented activities further proves that UMT’s seaside campus is an ideal setting, strengthening its position as a university synonymous with marine science, sustainability, and sustainable development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
