Kuala Nerus, 6 March – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) aims to establish itself as one of the leading marine universities, striving to become a centre of excellence in research and education related to marine science, oceans, and marine technology.

UMT Vice Chancellor, Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri Ibrahim, stated that the university is committed to making a significant contribution to the sustainability of marine resources and advancing knowledge in fisheries, marine biotechnology, marine ecosystems, and other related fields.

He added that, with a strong focus on marine and ocean studies, UMT aspires to be a key reference for research and innovation, aiming to enhance global understanding of marine ecosystems and provide solutions to challenges faced by the marine industry.

“UMT is also working on strengthening international relations with higher education institutions, government agencies, and the private sector to expand its global influence.

“As a result of these efforts, UMT has achieved international recognition, ranking 195th in the QS Asia University Rankings. Additionally, UMT has been placed in the 251-300 range in The Young University Rankings and ranked 160th in the UI Green Metric World University Rankings. We have also received various other international recognitions and rankings.”

He further stated that, in line with technological advancements, UMT has introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digitalization Programme for the entire university community.

Professor Zamri emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s call to ensure that every individual acquires AI-related skills.

“UMT has made the AI subject or module compulsory for all students before graduation. Staff members are also required to gain knowledge in AI.

“The mandatory implementation of the AI subject will begin in the next semester (October). Currently, we are offering it as an elective in the form of a micro-credential, allowing students to enroll in the programme online at any time.

“For staff, this programme has already started through our talent development division.

“This training aims to provide exposure to AI in more specific fields, such as adaptive education, smart university management, and predictive analytics to support strategic planning,” he explained.

Meanwhile, UMT has set eight key focus areas and 45 strategies to be implemented by 2025 to establish itself as a Specialized Marine University.

Several initiatives have been planned to support this vision, including the introduction of new academic programs related to the marine industry.

“Among them are the Bachelor of Shipping and Port Management and the Bachelor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, two proposed programs aimed at strengthening UMT as a marine-focused university,” he stated during the Vice Chancellor’s Address 2025, themed “Strengthening Unity Towards a Leading Marine University”, held at Dewan Sultan Mizan.
