KUALA NERUS, 14 May – Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) continues to demonstrate strong commitment to promoting a culture of occupational safety and health (OSH) through the celebration of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Day 2025 at the university level, held in a lively manner with various academic and practical activities.

Organised by UMT’s Occupational Safety and Health Unit (UKKP), the programme aimed to raise awareness among campus community members about the importance of OSH and to encourage healthy lifestyle practices in daily work environments.

The event also received support from several private agencies, which contributed their expertise and exhibitions related to OSH.

The opening ceremony was officiated by UMT Registrar, Ts. Wan Abdul Manan Wan Abdullah, representing the Vice-Chancellor of UMT.

In his officiating speech, he said UMT has developed a comprehensive OSH policy as a key pillar in the university’s administration.

“At UMT, we always prioritise safety and health aspects in every activity we organise. Risk management and analysis are standard practices at UMT to ensure a safe and controlled working environment in line with technological advancements and new challenges in the higher education sector,” he said.

One of the key initiatives of this year’s OSH Open Day was the official launch of the UKKP UMT website, which will serve as the main platform for information dissemination, incident reporting, and a reference source for policies and best practices related to OSH on campus.

“This initiative is expected to broaden information accessibility for all university members and strengthen a more systematic and responsive work culture in addressing safety and health issues.”

Ts. Wan Abdul Manan added that fostering a culture of safe work practices is not only vital for staff but also serves as a model for students and the wider community.

“UMT aims to establish a healthy and safe work ecosystem that not only protects staff but also shapes student attitudes and awareness to carry these values beyond campus in the future,” he said.

The event also strengthened UMT’s role as a community-conscious institution through the implementation of university social responsibility (USR) activities, particularly for school laboratory assistants in the surrounding area.

“They were given exposure to safe work practices in laboratories to minimise the risk of injury and accidents when handling chemicals and scientific equipment.”

This annual celebration affirms UMT’s commitment to instilling a safe, healthy, and sustainable work culture, in line with efforts to build a progressive campus and serve as a model for other institutions in OSH management.
